Mentorship

IBCLC Pathway 3 Mentorship

At LCB, we believe that the path to becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) should be defined by your passion and skill, not by your financial or geographic limitations.

Patients cite cost as the main prohibitive factor in initiating consults and returning to their lactation consultant for follow up services. When you bill through insurance, you can dramatically improve patient experience and your revenue while lessening administrative burden. LCB compensation is based on a percentage of payments collected for you, not on an hourly rate or monthly fee, so you will always come out ahead and be profitable.

Applicants will be considered on a case by case basis. To be admitted into the program, you must:

  • Have 90 hrs of lactation-specific education completed

  • Have most or all of the 14 health science requirements completed:

    • 8 required college level courses

    • 6 remaining health science courses which do not need to be completed with a college or university (basic life support must be completed)

  • Be ready to begin your clinical hours

We guide you through five distinct phases of professional growth:

Phase 1: Clinical Observation: Learn by watching lactation specialists in action.

Phase 2: Transition to Clinical Practice: Lead consultations with direct oversight. Start creating your private practice business plan.

Phase 3: Supervised Independent Practice: Take consultations independently with mentor guidance available as needed while you earn your 500 clinical hours; LCB will begin applying you to obtain in-network insurance contracts.

Phase 4: The Waiting Period: Apply for the IBLCE board exam, and wait for the exam date and results (about five months); LCB will start phasing you into their provider billing model.

Phase 5: IBCLC Certification: Celebrate your new credentials and launch your career.
