Mentorship Information

In order to become an IBCLC and an LCB Mentee, you'll need to complete the following requirements:

Lactation Education

  • 95 hours of Lactation Specific Education

College Level Health Science Courses:

  • Biology
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Infant and Child Growth and Development
  • Intro to Clinical Research
  • Nutrition
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

Continuing Education Courses (not required to be from a college/university):

  • Basic Life Support (must be completed before beginning clinical hours)
  • Medical Documentation
  • Medical Terminology
  • Occupational Safety and Security for Health Professionals
  • Ethics for Health Professionals
  • Universal Safety Precautions or Infection Control and Prevention

Resources for Completing Required Education:

  1. 95 hours of Lactation Specific Education
  2. Health Sciences That Must Be Completed with a College or University:
    • Enroll in classes with your local community college as a non-degree seeking student.
    • Sophia Learning (make sure Sophia is accredited in your state for college credit)
  3. Health Sciences That Do Not Require a College or University:
